Liverpool had their best Premier League season ever in 2018/19, scoring 97 points and winning all but eight games, drawing seven and losing just one. In almost any other season, this record would have been more than enough to secure the Premier League title, but in 2018/19, Manchester City managed to score one more point, taking a second consecutive title.
The heartbreak for reds fans was eased slightly by Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League for a 6th time. However, the pain of not winning a top-flight league title for 30 years is weighing on the team.
Victory in 2020?
Liverpool have continued to look sharp in 2020. Their team remains mostly unchanged from last season, and they have kept delivering strong performances. Twelve games into the season, they have won all but one of their games, and have so far not lost a match. The next three teams in the table won eight games out of twelve, hinting that Liverpool could be beginning to steal a march.
Rivals
Liverpool don’t have much in the way of competition for the title this season. The traditional “Big 6” is no more, with Liverpool and Manchester City currently performing significantly better than the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
After winning the Premier League for two seasons in a row, Manchester City appear to be focusing their attention on the Champions League, a trophy that they are yet to win. This could provide a small reprieve for Liverpool by having its closest competitor focused elsewhere.
What’s Working at Anfield?
After taking over the Manager role at Liverpool in October 2015, Jurgen Klopp has been working hard to reshape the team and change its playing style. This has paid off, with the reds taking a much more aggressive approach to games. This sees them seek to regain possession of the ball as soon as it gets lost, rather than falling back to regroup. By being more aggressive, Liverpool can keep possession of the ball more and control the game, creating more shooting opportunities.
Predictions?
With twelve games in, it’s still too early to make a definitive prediction, but it can give an insight into how the rest of the season will play out. Liverpool have been consistent throughout the season so far, demonstrated by the fact that the only game they haven’t won, was a draw. It would appear that 2019/20 is Liverpool’s season to lose, and it could be their best chance to break the 30-year league title drought.
